Physical Education (PE)

Vision statement

At Halsford Park, we widen and deepen the essential knowledge, skills and understanding of learners in a variety of ways.  Learners’ understand the importance of keeping themselves healthy and that a healthy lifestyle can help to develop self-esteem as well as the benefits to their mental well-being.  During PE lessons, children are taught resilience and teamwork as they work together to develop their skills. Learners’ understand the importance of being a good sports person and all children have the opportunity to compete in their house team as part of Sports Day in the summer term.  As a school, we also compete in competitive team events throughout the sporting calendar including; Football, Netball, Athletics and swimming.  We also participate in a local celebration of Dance, hosted by a local secondary school.  We teach a variety of subjects in PE as required and set out by the government in the National Curriculum and each year group has the opportunity to have a qualified sports coach for a half term each academic year in sports such as cricket, golf, tennis, multi skills and tag rugby.  In Year 3 children will experience swimming lessons at the local swimming pool.  We use our extensive grounds all year round to facilitate high quality Physical Education.

From The National Curriculum in England – framework document 2013 Purpose of study

“A high-quality physical education curriculum inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically-demanding activities. It should provide opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. Opportunities to compete in sport and other activities build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect.”
