Intent

At Halsford Park Primary School, we believe that every child can become a confident, successful mathematician. Our aim is to develop positive attitudes towards mathematics by providing a curriculum that is engaging, challenging and accessible to all learners. We want children to see mathematics as a valuable life skill, equipping them with the knowledge, understanding and confidence to solve problems, think logically and make sense of the world around them.

Our mathematics curriculum is carefully sequenced to ensure that children build secure knowledge and skills over time. We provide clear progression across all year groups by following the White Rose Maths small steps. Combined with high-quality teaching, practical experiences and rich mathematical discussion, children develop fluency, reasoning and problem-solving skills while making meaningful connections within mathematics and to real-life contexts.

We encourage children to question, investigate, explain and justify their thinking using accurate mathematical vocabulary. By promoting resilience, independence and a willingness to embrace challenge, we foster confident learners who are not afraid to make mistakes and learn from them. Through our inclusive approach, every child is supported to achieve their potential and develop the mathematical skills they need for the next stage of their education and for everyday life.
