Intent

At Halsford Park Primary School, our History curriculum nurtures the development of the whole child through a carefully sequenced programme of learning from Kapow that builds substantive and disciplinary knowledge over time.

Guided by our core values of Responsibility, Respect, Courage and Compassion, we inspire pupils to think like historians: developing curiosity, confidence and analytical skills as they question evidence, explore different perspectives and construct informed interpretations of the past.

Through an inclusive and ambitious curriculum, every child is supported to achieve, feel represented and develop a strong understanding of how history has shaped identities, cultures and communities. We strive to provide an irresistible curriculum that fully encompasses the National Curriculum, engaging pupils through meaningful learning experiences that challenge, motivate and inspire.

By fostering resilience, independence and curiosity, we encourage children to make connections between the past and present, enabling them to become reflective, informed citizens who contribute positively to their school community and wider society, both now and in the future. Teachers are supported with high-quality resources and subject knowledge to ensure history lessons are engaging, accessible and enable every learner to soar to success.

“A high-quality history education will help pupils gain a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world. It should inspire pupils’ curiosity to know more about the past. Teaching should equip pupils to ask perceptive questions, think critically, weigh evidence, sift arguments, and develop perspective and judgement. History helps pupils to understand the complexity of people’s lives, the process of change, the diversity of societies and relationships between different groups, as well as their own identity and the challenges of their time.”
