Art and Design

Vision statement

At Halsford Park, we believe that Art and Design gives children the opportunity to experience the world around them and express themselves in a variety of ways by widening and deepening their essential knowledge and skills.  We follow the Edison connected curriculum to organise and plan our curriculum to ensure that children learn knowledge and skills progressively, term on term and year on year as they move through the school.  Art and Design is taught through our connected curriculum and linked to the wider learning experiences, ensuing an immersive experience.

At our school, learners have the opportunity to take part in a range of hands on artistic activities. Art is vitally important to develop their creativity, imagination and improve their self-esteem and wellbeing. We do this through exploring famous artists, architects and designers, and developing skills in the design process, sketching, painting, drawing and sculpture through our connected curriculum.

From The National Curriculum in England – framework document 2013 Purpose of study

“Art, craft and design embody some of the highest forms of human creativity. A high-quality art and design education should engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. As pupils progress, they should be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design. They should also know how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation.”
