Intent

At Halsford Park Primary School, our Computing curriculum nurtures the development of the whole child through carefully sequenced learning that enables all pupils to become confident, responsible and creative users of technology. Through a broad, ambitious and inclusive curriculum, we ensure that every child develops the substantive and disciplinary knowledge needed to thrive in an increasingly digital world.

Guided by our Core Values of Responsibility, Respect, Courage and Compassion, we aim to equip pupils with the knowledge, skills and understanding to use technology safely, effectively and purposefully. Our curriculum is designed to provide full coverage of the National Curriculum through the three key strands of Computer Science, Information Technology and Digital Literacy, ensuring clear progression from the Early Years through to Year 6.

Using the Purple Mash Computing Scheme as the foundation for our curriculum, learning is carefully sequenced to build and revisit knowledge over time, enabling pupils to make meaningful connections and develop increasing independence. We strive to provide an irresistible Computing curriculum that inspires curiosity, creativity and problem-solving, challenging pupils to become resilient and reflective learners.

A strong emphasis is placed on digital citizenship and online safety, empowering children to become thoughtful, respectful and responsible members of the digital community. By the time pupils leave Halsford Park Primary School, they will be equipped with the confidence, skills and cultural capital needed to flourish in secondary education and beyond.

From The National Curriculum in England – framework document 2013 Purpose of study

“A high-quality computing education equips pupils to use computational thinking and creativity to understand and change the world. Computing has deep links with mathematics, science, and design and technology, and provides insights into both natural and artificial systems. The core of computing is computer science, in which pupils are taught the principles of information and computation, how digital systems work, and how to put this knowledge to use through programming. Building on this knowledge and understanding, pupils are equipped to use information technology to create programs, systems and a range of content. Computing also ensures that pupils become digitally literate – able to use, and express themselves and develop their ideas through, information and communication technology – at a level suitable for the future workplace and as active participants in a digital world.”
