At Halsford Park Primary School, we follow the Kapow Primary Art and Design curriculum, which provides a carefully sequenced and ambitious programme of study that builds pupils' substantive knowledge and disciplinary skills progressively over time. Through this curriculum, we nurture the development of the whole child, inspiring every learner to think, create and communicate like an artist or designer while developing the confidence to experiment, take creative risks and express their ideas with imagination and purpose.
Guided by our core values of Responsibility, Respect, Courage and Compassion, we provide an inclusive curriculum in which every child feels represented, supported and valued. Through the study of diverse artists, designers, craftspeople and cultures, pupils develop an appreciation of art as a powerful form of human expression and gain an understanding of its significance across different historical periods, communities and creative industries.
Our Art and Design curriculum is designed to be irresistible, fully meeting the expectations of the National Curriculum through engaging, purposeful and hands-on learning experiences. The Kapow curriculum enables pupils to progressively develop their understanding of artistic techniques, materials, formal elements and creative processes while encouraging them to observe, question, evaluate and refine their work with increasing independence and confidence.
By fostering curiosity, resilience and reflective thinking, we empower pupils to value originality, respond thoughtfully to their own work and the work of others, and develop the visual literacy and creative confidence to make a positive contribution to our school community and the wider world. Through Art and Design, every child is supported to soar to success as a confident, imaginative and reflective individual.
From The National Curriculum in England – framework document 2013 Purpose of study
“Art, craft and design embody some of the highest forms of human creativity. A high-quality art and design education should engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. As pupils progress, they should be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design. They should also know how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation.”
