    Intent

At Halsford Park Primary School, our Design and Technology curriculum, supported by Kapow Primary, inspires pupils to become curious, creative and innovative thinkers who develop an understanding of how products are designed, made and improved. Through engaging, hands-on learning experiences, pupils are encouraged to think like designers and engineers, developing the confidence to identify problems, generate ideas, plan, create and evaluate purposeful products.

Our carefully sequenced curriculum builds both substantive and disciplinary knowledge over time, enabling pupils to develop the technical knowledge, practical skills and design thinking needed to solve real-world problems. Pupils learn about the impact of design and technology on everyday life and explore how innovation has shaped the way people live, work and interact with the world.

Guided by our Core Values of Responsibility, Respect, Courage and Compassion, we provide an inclusive and ambitious curriculum that encourages creativity, resilience and independence. Through designing, making and evaluating, pupils learn to take risks, reflect on their work and respond positively to challenges, developing the confidence to improve and refine their ideas.

Our aim is for every child to leave Halsford Park as a resourceful, enterprising and capable individual who can apply their knowledge and skills creatively, understand the role of design and technology in society, and make a positive contribution to the world around them.

From The National Curriculum in England – framework document 2013 Purpose of study

“Design and technology is an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject. Using creativity and imagination, pupils design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values. They acquire a broad range of subject knowledge and draw on disciplines such as mathematics, science, engineering, computing and art. Pupils learn how to take risks, becoming resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable citizens. Through the evaluation of past and present design and technology, they develop a critical understanding of its impact on daily life and the wider world. High-quality design and technology education makes an essential contribution to the creativity, culture, wealth and well-being of the nation.”
