At Halsford Park, we believe that Music gives children the opportunity to experience the world around them and express themselves in a variety of ways. By providing opportunities to perform, listen to and evaluate music, children experience through first hand We follow ‘Charanga’ to organise and plan our Music curriculum to ensure that children learn knowledge and skills progressively, term on term and year on year as they move through the school.
At our school, learners have the opportunity to take part in a range of hands on Musical activities. Music is vitally important to develop their creativity, imagination and improve their self-esteem and wellbeing. We do this through exploring famous musicians and composers to support the children in understanding what it means to be a musician.
In Year 5, children have the opportunity to learn to play a musical instrument through a block of weekly lessons lead by West Sussex Music Hub. This is one term whole-class ensemble teaching programme that aims to inspire children to take up a musical instrument. 1Term2Learn maximises national funding, providing even more children with access to high quality music education. Pupils learn to play a musical instrument with increasing accuracy, fluency, control and expression, using and understanding musical notations. They have also developed their understanding of rhythm, rhyme and keeping to a beat.
From The National Curriculum In England: Programmes of study March 2021
“Music is a universal language that embodies one of the highest forms of creativity. A high-quality music education should engage and inspire pupils to develop a love of music and their talent as musicians, and so increase their self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement. As pupils progress, they should develop a critical engagement with music, allowing them to compose, and to listen with discrimination to the best in the musical canon.”
