  • Physical Education (PE)

    Intent

At Halsford Park Primary School, we believe that Physical Education is an essential part of developing the whole child. Through a broad, ambitious and carefully sequenced curriculum, pupils progressively develop the knowledge, skills and confidence to lead healthy, active lives while reflecting our core values of Responsibility, Respect, Courage and Compassion. PE provides every child with opportunities to succeed, challenge themselves and experience enjoyment, regardless of their starting point.

Our curriculum develops competence in fundamental movement, games, gymnastics, dance, athletics, outdoor and adventurous activities, and swimming, enabling pupils to apply and refine skills with increasing confidence and understanding. Alongside physical development, pupils learn to collaborate, communicate, evaluate performance, solve problems and demonstrate resilience, determination, leadership and good sportsmanship.

We strive to create positive experiences of physical activity that inspire lifelong participation beyond primary school. Through inclusive teaching, competitive and cooperative opportunities, and meaningful personal challenges, pupils learn to appreciate the physical, mental and social benefits of being active. By celebrating effort, progress and achievement, we aim for every child to leave Halsford Park as a physically literate, confident and motivated individual, equipped with the skills, knowledge and attitudes to make positive choices for their health, wellbeing and future participation in sport and physical activity.

From The National Curriculum in England – framework document 2013 Purpose of study

“A high-quality physical education curriculum inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically-demanding activities. It should provide opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. Opportunities to compete in sport and other activities build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect.”
